An Analysis of Lombok Island Tourism Opportunities and Challenges Post R20 Forum

Abstract

The R20 (Religion 20) momentum in the series of G20 (Group of 20) Precedence events is a real The R20 (Religion 20) momentum in the series of G20 (Group of 20) Precedence events is a real commitment from the Indonesian government in supporting the 10 New Balis program in the Tourism sector. R20 is the right moment to promote peaceful, moderate and non-violent Islamic values as a response to the phenomenon of global extremism. Intolerance and religious unharmony in one region will have a negative impact on the tourism sector, one of which is on the island of Lombok. Based on its tourism potential and strong religious entity background, Lombok Island was chosen as the case study in this research. This research aims to analyze the opportunities and challenges of tourism on the island of Lombok after the R20 forum. The method used in preparing this research is qualitative with a descriptive analysis approach using secondary data. The research results show that Lombok has opportunities for (1) economic revival after Covid-19; (2) equalization of the tourism sector; (3) Halal Tourism pilot in Indonesia; and (4) easy accessibility between islands, while challenges include (1) issues of religious harmony and intolerance; (2) dichotomy of majority and minority; (3) trust issues and negative framing on social media; and (4) lack of trust among tourists to make Lombok a tourist destination. Therefore, all components of the nation must work together to face the problem of religious harmony more wisely and uphold the values of tolerance so that the tourism sector can continue to develop and the Indonesian economy becomes more advanced.
