This paper explores the role of researchers, the keys to success, obstacles, and directions for research collaboration of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Questionnaires containing open questions were distributed to 29 researchers who were members of the third and fourth batches of basic research training participants at BRIN. A total of 29 researchers responded to the questionnaire. The researchers came from 23 disciplines, spanning 10 fields of biology, eight fields of physics, and four fields of social sciences. The findings show that there are 22 roles and 17 research success factors. The most common obstacles mentioned in research collaboration are coordination problems, differences in understanding, and research costs. The visions raised by the researchers are collaboration with more stakeholders, more patents, and utilization of herbal medicine. This study contributes to research on researchers by highlighting the benefits of qualitative questionnaires. The findings of this study also have implications for research institutions to build systems that can overcome various obstacles faced by researchers in carrying out research collaborations. In addition, BRIN also needs strategic planning that takes into account the visions expressed in this research.
